A magazine about how we live now
Oriel is an independent magazine published from London since 2019: culture, design, food, technology and travel, written slowly and edited closely.

Why it is called Oriel
An oriel is a window that leans out from a wall, so you can see a little further up and down the street than you could from inside. That is the job we set ourselves in 2019: look slightly further than the news, at the objects, habits and places people actually live with.
We publish four or five stories a week online, a podcast every other Thursday and a printed issue twice a year. Everything is edited by the same small team, and most of it is written by people who have done the thing they are writing about.
Oriel is owned by the people who make it. Readers pay for it through the print edition, and a handful of advertisers we choose ourselves cover the rest.
How we work
We commission, then wait
Most stories take weeks. We would rather publish four good pieces a week than twenty quick ones.
We pay for everything we run
Every writer, photographer and illustrator is paid on publication, at a published rate.
No sponsored stories
Advertisers can buy a page in print or a slot in the newsletter. They cannot buy an article, or read one before you do.
We correct in public
If we get something wrong, we fix it and say so at the foot of the story, with the date.
